why the inside of Traveler’s mask smells of vanilla

It just occurred to me that it’s possible that Fenchurch didn’t mean he had been inside the Traveler, but that the Speaker and/or his mask had been inside the Traveler.

Fenchurch’s statement was “…been inside the Traveler, you know. Smells faintly of vanilla.” This is included in the item description of the Speaker’s Mask. People thus far have assumed he is referring to himself having been inside the Traveler, but if Fenchurch was talking about the Mask itself - describing it to Tess, or perhaps making a pitch - he could simply mean that the Mask smells like vanilla from having been in the Traveler.
